Storyline

Goli Ghasemi is a 23-year-old immigrant Afghan girl in Iran. She is studying psychology at a university in Tehran, a field she has loved since childhood and has mentioned her interest about it in her elementary school letters. Goli is an illegal immigrant and has been accepted on a university scholarship because of her high diploma grade. She has only a few months to travel to Afghanistan to obtain an Iranian visa for legal residence, otherwise she will be expelled from the university.

Goli’s father died ten years ago and she lives with her mother. She has many intellectual differences with her mother and even her sisters in terms of beliefs and lifestyle, and these differences have caused their lifestyles to be incompatible. They sometimes face serious conflicts with each other. She does not accept the traditional beliefs of her mother’s generation, beliefs that oppose girls’ education. They believe that Afghan girls should get married at a young age. Goli’s family has repeatedly asked her to force her to marry and stop her from studying, but she resisted hard and did not comply, so her mother and brothers refused to support her materially and spiritually. Today, when she has to go to Afghanistan to get a visa, her mother and brothers do not support her and she has to find a way for this dangerous journey herself.

The high cost of travel, the insecurity in Afghanistan and the apprehension that goes back to her childhood and past, the fear of troubles from her relatives in Afghanistan for not getting married, etc. are issues that make the travel difficult.

About
the project

Illegal immigrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan and other neighboring countries of are not allowed to study in Iran.
Goli is one of these immigrants in Iran, but since she had very good academic and grade point average during her school and high school years, she was able to obtain a permit to attend one of Tehran’s public universities, provided that after a maximum of two semesters she goes to Afghanistan and get a visa and legally return to Iran to have a study permit.
Immigrants in Iran face many problems and restrictions, but another issue that is addressed in the film is the problems of most immigrant girls who, in addition to legal restrictions, also face family problems. One of these problems is the tradition of previous generations of Afghan men and women who do not consider university education suitable for girls. This difference of opinion between the two generations has created conflicts between them. The older generation of Afghans believe that a girl should get married at a young age. In most cases, they are forced to marry without even knowing about the arrangement. Goli also has had similar issues, but what sets her apart from other Afghan girls is her resilience which has led her family to abandon her and stop their financial and emotional support.
The difference between Goli’s and her mother’s is one of the important issues covered in this film.
Apart from all these issues, there are many legal problems regarding immigrants in Iran. For example, immigrants are not legally allowed to work in Iran even if they study in higher education and graduation. This forces many immigrants, despite having master’s degrees or even higher, rest content with low-level jobs unrelated to their specialty and field of study.
