Storyline

Kal Fatemeh is the story of a village woman who has endured many sufferings. She works as much as several men in her farm. In the silence of her world, a strange uproar flares up and does not go out. Kal Fatemeh is neither an amazing hero nor a myth. She’s a standing and firm figure of persistence and motherhood that are present in her busy daily routine. She carries a sorrow whose weight can only be seen in her footsteps deep in the snow. Kal Fatemeh is a 40-year-old deaf and mute woman who is raising her two teenage sons, despite of her busy rural life and routine. Under the control of the tradition and fate and the patriarchal society, she witnesses the sufferings of her daughter. As a child, she was forced by her father to get married, and now, as a young and divorced mother, and by the order of her older brother, Hossein, she has no place in the house, and she goes door to door looking for her son, who was sold as a child to buy drugs. Kal Fatemeh is a witness to all these sufferings and she has no complaints.

The kind comments that I received from my previous films motivated me a hundredfold to return to the pristine rural lives to make another film and turn the work and effort of these humble and hardworking women into another film. That’s how I met Kal Fatemeh, a strong and independent woman.

Kal Fatemeh’s life was a great lesson for me. It made me wonder how to be hopeful with so much suffering and hardship, and how to work with so much passion and love.

Since Kal Fatemeh is deaf and does not have the power to speak, she looks at the world in a different way in her silence. This was the most important point that I tried to use in my film. In this film, I tried to portray the feeling of being deaf and mute by using the language of images and cinema. That is why the film uses beautiful shots and has little dialogue, and in fact conveys the beautiful world of Fatemeh to the audience.
