DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY

Marjan Khosravi is an Iranian documentary filmmaker from the Bakhtiari community. Born and raised in a Bakhtiari village, she studied Cinema and Media Art and began her career working in film production and as an assistant director before making her first documentary in 2018. Her work is rooted in the experiences of women in rural Iran and explores autonomy, patriarchal traditions, social inequality, cultural transformation and the changing relationship between communities and their environment.

Her mid-length documentary The Snow Calls was selected for the IDFA Competition for Student Documentary in 2020 and subsequently won Best Feature Documentary at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. She later directed The Dream of a Horse, nominated for Best Short Documentary at the Krakow Film Festival, and Mrs. Iran’s Husband, which received the Best International Short Documentary Award at Hot Docs in 2023.

Khosravi’s debut feature documentary, Requiem for a Tribe, received awards during its development at the Hot Docs Forum and DMZ Docs Industry before premiering in competition at the Shanghai International Film Festival in 2024. The film subsequently screened at Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival and True/False Film Fest. Her personal connection to the film and the Bakhtiari community was profiled by Variety.

Her latest feature documentary, Dreams of the Wild Oaks, continues her exploration of gender, freedom and tradition within the Bakhtiari community. The project has received support from international organizations including the Catapult Film Fund, the IDFA Bertha Fund and the Alter-Ciné Foundation.
